Hotelier objects to city-backed competition

The owner of the Greensboro  Marriott Downtown says that a proposed city-supported hotel development in the works would cut his business forcing the company to lay off 30 employees.

William Yung III, president of Kentucky-based Columbia Sussex Corp. said in a letter delivered via email to city council on Friday that the proposed Wyndham project on Elm Street would take up to 20 percent of his $5.5 million in room revenue.

In addition to the lost revenue and layoffs, Yung contends that the city-supported competition would force his company to delay future improvements and jeopardize the substantial debt service carried on the hotel.
